What’s changing for Europe in 2026:
1️⃣ EES (Entry/Exit System) — Live NOW since October 12, 2025 • Replaces passport stamps with biometric registration (face + fingerprints) • Fully mandatory from April 10, 2026 across all 29 Schengen countries • Add 90 min buffer at European airports during rollout • Pre-register free at: travel-europe.europa.eu/ees (or “Travel to Europe” app)
2️⃣ ETIAS — Coming Q4 2026 (Oct–Dec) • Required for US, Canada, Australia, UK, NZ + 56 more countries • NOT a visa — pre-travel authorization, done online in ~10 min • FEE IS €20 (NOT €7 — updated by EU Commission July 17, 2025) • Valid 3 years, unlimited trips across 30 European countries • Children under 18 and adults over 70 are fee-exempt • ⚠️ NOT yet accepting applications as of March 2026
3️⃣ Tourist Fees & Timed Entry • Venice: day-tripper entry fee on peak dates (non-overnight visitors) • Rome: Trevi Fountain barrier zone fee • Barcelona, Amsterdam, Florence: overnight tourist taxes
4️⃣ Major Attractions Require Advance Booking • Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Sagrada Família, Eiffel Tower • Book via Tiqets or GetYourGuide — 3–4 weeks minimum in peak season
