Why We Left the U.S. | How NIMBYism Blocks Affordable Housing

Before we left the United States, we spent years watching housing debates play out where we lived — particularly in Santa Cruz. Again and again, we heard the same explanations for why housing had become so expensive: shortages, regulations, market forces. What was missing was any real connection between those outcomes and the local decisions that quietly produced them.

This video is about that disconnect — and why understanding it became part of what pushed us to leave the U.S. and eventually move abroad.

It looks at how NIMBYism actually works in practice — not as a mindset, but as a process. How delay becomes power. How projects don’t fail outright, but get slowly reshaped until affordability disappears. And why the results so often end up confirming the very fears used to block housing in the first place.

We also talk about density — what people imagine when they hear the word, what it actually means, and why blocking it tends to make traffic, congestion, and infrastructure strain worse, not better.

After moving abroad and seeing a very different approach to housing, we gained some distance — and a clearer view of what went wrong back home.

This isn’t about bad intentions.
It’s about incentives, procedures, and consequences.
